THE LOS ALAMITOS COMMUNITY REMEMBERS LOCAL ARMY RANGER

(Los Alamitos, CA) – The City of Los Alamitos, the Los Alamitos Unified School District, and the Joint Forces Training Base invites the community to honor the life of Army Ranger Sgt. Thomas R. MacPherson on the Joint Forces Training Base Army Airfield on Thursday, October 25 at 11:30 a.m., with planeside honors, commonly called a “Hero Mission.”  Community members planning to attend the Hero Mission should arrive by 10:30 a.m. to park and walk to the Airfield.

Sgt. MacPherson was killed during combat operations in support of Operation Enduring Freedom on October 12, 2012.

Sgt. MacPherson, who was 26 years old and a graduate of Los Alamitos High School, was killed by small arms fire in the Ghazni Province in Afghanistan as he led an assault against an enemy position, U.S. Army officials said. Los Alamitos High School counselor Tina Hereen remembers Sgt. MacPherson as, “An amazing young man filled with a contagious smile and his character was one that you would hope others including your own children, could emulate.   I will never forget his genuineness and feeling of him caring more about how my day was when he came into my office than the reverse.“

MacPherson was a team leader assigned to Delta Company, 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash. This was his fourth deployment to Afghanistan and he had also previously served one deployment in Iraq.

Sgt. MacPherson is survived by his wife, Claudia MacPherson, and their son, Brayden, of Tacoma, Wash., and his parents, Troy and Diona MacPherson of Long Beach.

The funeral is scheduled for the next day on October 26 at Cottonwood Church located at 4505 Katella Avenue in Los Alamitos. Media should contact Sgt. 1st Class Jessica Inigo at (562) 795-2777 or at (916) 548-7945. Though media are invited, the family asks not to be interviewed or questioned during the ceremony.

Jogger Stabbed in Rossmoor

Orange County Register article

On October 23, 2012 at approximately 9:15 P.M., the Orange County Sheriff’s Department began investigating an assault that occurred in the community of Rossmoor.  According to news reports, a 28 year old woman was jogging in the 3200 block of Bostonian Drive when the suspect grabbed her from behind.  In the ensuing conflict, the victim suffered stab wounds to the arms, hands, and face.  The suspect later fled the area on a BMX bicycle.  A search of the area was unsuccessful and the investigation is continuing.
The suspect is described as a Latino man in his 20’s, between 5 feet, 7 inches and 5 feet, 9 inches tall, with a thin build.  He was wearing dark clothing and a baseball cap.
The Orange County Sheriff's Department asks that anyone with information about the attack on October 23rd, call 714-628-7170. Tips can also be submitted at 855-TIP-OCCS, 855-847-6227, or occrimestoppers.org.

The Los Alamitos Police Department encourages people to call and report unusual activity occurring in the community.  Our community members are vital partners that enhance our ability to disrupt criminal activity before it occurs, and be in the most efficient position to apprehend violators if criminal activity does occur.  In addition, we will continue to actively cooperate with all our Public Safety partners to maintain a safe community.
If you see something or someone suspicious in your neighborhood, do not hesitate to call your local Police Department.  In the City of Los Alamitos, please call our 24-Hour Dispatch line at (562) 594-7232 or if it is an Emergency, please call 9-1-1.

We would like to share some personal safety tips for your consideration:
  • Trust your gut – If you feel uncomfortable or unsafe in a situation, get out.
  • When out at night, avoid poorly lit or deserted areas.  Try to travel in groups of friends or walk with your pet dog.
  • Carry only the money you’ll need on a particular day.
  • Don’t exhibit cash or any other inviting targets such as cell phones, hand-held electronic games, or expensive jewelry and clothing.
  • If you must walk or jog with headphones, try not to cover both ears.  Be aware of your surroundings so that you can hear vehicles or pedestrians approaching you.
  • If you think someone is following you, switch directions or cross the street. If the person continues to follow you, move quickly toward an open store or restaurant or a lighted house. Don’t be afraid to yell for help.
  • Do everything you can to keep a stranger from getting into your car, or to keep a stranger from forcing you into his or her car.
  • If someone tries to rob you, give up your property—don’t give up your life.
  • If you are robbed or assaulted, report the crime to the police. Try to describe the attacker accurately. Your actions can help prevent someone else from becoming a victim.

Southern California Edison Urges Customers to Conserve as High Temperatures are Forecast in the Region

With high temperatures forecast in many parts of Southern California today and throughout the week, Southern California Edison (SCE) is urging customers to conserve power.

SCE anticipates having sufficient resources to meet forecast electricity demand. But with energy use rising during extreme heat conditions, conservation can provide an added reserve should an unexpected power emergency occur, such as mechanical problems affecting a major power plant or wildfires shutting down a major transmission system. Conservation also helps minimize the impact on the distribution system when customers use energy around-the-clock.

Conservation helps customers keep their bills lower during high temperatures - bills can increase up to 30 percent for residential customers who use air conditioning. Conservation also helps reduce stress on the overall electrical system.

SCE recommends that customers:
.        Set thermostats no lower than 78 degrees.
.        Use electric fans instead of air conditioning when practical.
.        Turn off unused appliances and equipment.
.        Shut off lights when leaving a room.
.        Close drapes and blinds to keep out direct sunlight during hot periods.
.        Avoid using evaporative coolers or humidifiers at the same time an air conditioner is running.
.        Operate swimming pool equipment and energy-intensive appliances, such as dishwashers, washing machines and dryers, during early morning and evening hours.
.        Limit the opening and reopening of refrigerators, which are major users of electricity in most homes.
.        When possible, businesses should shift power-intensive work processes to morning or evening hours.
.        Turn off lights in unused areas.

SCE recommends customers try to stay as cool as possible during the heat.
.        Keep outdoor activities to a minimum, and drink a lot of water during the hottest parts of the day.
.        During a power outage, turn off and unplug any unnecessary electrical equipment, including sensitive electronics.
.        Open the refrigerator and freezer only when necessary to keep the food cold.
.        Low-income and medically sensitive customers can take advantage of "Cool Centers," which are operated by local governments and community-based organizations. A list of locations can be found at www.sce.com/coolcenters>.

SCE recommends customers follow these safety tips if a power outage occurs:
.        Use flashlights for lighting during a power outage; do not use candles because they pose a significant fire hazard.
.        Never attempt to move or go near a downed power line. Call 911 to report the situation.
.        Watch for traffic signals that may be out. Approach those intersections as four-way stops.
.        If someone in your home is dependent on electric-powered, life sustaining medical equipment, have an emergency plan that includes a back-up power source, or make arrangements to relocate.

For updates, follow SCE on Twitter at www.twitter.com/SCE> and on Facebook at www.facebook.com/socaledison>.

2011 Officer of the Year

Last week at the Los Alamitos Chamber of Commerce Police Appreciation Luncheon, the Los Alamitos Police Department was proud to announce our 2011 Officer of the Year recipient, Police Officer Kain Gallaugher.

Officer Kain Gallaugher is a Southern California native who grew up in the City of Whittier. After high school, he attended Fullerton Junior College and later transferred to DeVry University where, in 2002, he obtained a degree in Electronic Computer Technology. Kain developed a passion for drag racing, serving as a crew chief on a professional drag racing team for two years. He then became the driver of his own drag racing team, racing professionally for 6 years. Out of those 6 years, he placed 4th once, 2nd four times, and 1st in the division championship. While working in the field of electronics, Kain decided to pursue a career in law enforcement and, in 2004, he enrolled in the Police Academy at Golden West College. After graduating second in his class, Kain was hired by the Los Alamitos Police Department in January 2006.

For the past six years, Officer Gallaugher has proven to be an excellent member of the Police Department’s team. Kain is a Field Training Officer and is currently assigned as the Department’s Motor Officer. He also serves in a variety of ancillary assignments, such as the Mobile Command Post Team, Technology Team, Explorer Post Advisor, and Firearms Training Staff. Kain is an active member of the Peace Officers Association and was recently voted by his peers to be their Vice President.

As a Motor Officer, Kain is the Department’s primary traffic investigator and is a member of the regional Serious Traffic Accident Response (STAR) Team. He has used his technology skills to enhance the Department’s traffic computer programs and has worked hard to improve traffic flow during the City’s major events. Kain works closely with motor officers from neighboring jurisdictions and his selection as a lead training officer is a testament to his abilities and the respect he has garnered in his assignment. Recently, Kain was selected to be the department’s Drug Recognition Expert.

Kain and his wife, Brooke, enjoy raising their 20-month-old son, Trent, and 8-year-old nephew, Camrin. When he is not spending time with his family or pursuing his Bachelor’s Degree, he can be found working around the house, sky diving, and restoring cars.

2011 Police Employee of the Year

Last week at the Los Alamitos Chamber of Commerce Police Appreciation Luncheon, the Los Alamitos Police Department was proud to announce our 2011 Police Employee of the Year recipient, Police Aide David Jenkins.

David Jenkins was born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania and grew up in Pittsburgh. He earned a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Business Administration from The Citadel in South Carolina. Dave married his wife, Marilyn, in 1961 and they recently celebrated their 50th anniversary. He and Marilyn have two lovely daughters and five beautiful grandchildren ranging in age from 4 to 23. Ultimately achieving the rank of Captain, Dave served for three years in the United States Air Force as a Base Finance Officer. After his honorable discharge, he spent twelve years in the banking industry, followed by more than twenty years in aerospace where he worked for Hughes Aircraft and McDonnell Douglas. Learning to fly at the age of sixteen, Dave is an accomplished pilot with over 5,000 hours of total flight time. He holds a Commercial Certificate with instrument ratings for both single and multi-engine aircraft. Before retiring, Dave trained flight crews on the MD-80 for Continental Airlines.

Retirement left Dave looking for more ways to serve others, and in 2006, Dave was hired as a part-time Los Alamitos Police Aide, where he is assigned to parking control and can often be found following the street sweeper. He also assists in the Records Bureau by staffing the front counter. His friendly attitude and sociable demeanor create a welcoming environment for those who come to the Police Department. As a Police Aide, Dave dispenses an aura of old-fashion customer service, where his agreeable manner and willingness to help make him an asset to the entire Police Department.

2011 Policing Through Partnership Award

Last week at the Los Alamitos Chamber of Commerce Police Appreciation Luncheon, the Los Alamitos Police Department was proud to announce our 2011 Policing Through Partnership recipient, Pattie Laird.

As a long time resident of the West Orange County area, Pattie Laird has always been committed to serving her community. Her long list of civic accomplishments is mirrored by her professional, recreational, and personal accomplishments. With more than 32 years of real estate experience and as co-owner of Keller Williams Realty in Los Alamitos, Pattie is considered an area specialist who is well versed in the needs of the community.

Leading an active lifestyle, Pattie enjoys challenging herself and others to achieve maximum results. Counted among the pioneers of beach volleyball, Pattie is an accomplished indoor player who earned a gold medal in national women’s play. She also received gold, silver, and bronze medals at the Huntsman World Senior Games. She has coached boys and girls volleyball for Los Alamitos High School, leading the boys to the school’s first-ever league championship, and the girls to three league championships and a first-ever CIF championship. As a graduate of Orange County Fire Authority Academy Class 15 in 1992, Pattie used her knowledge as a firefighter and emergency medical technician to serve the City of Los Alamitos at Fire Station 2.

Pattie and her husband, Wink, currently reside in Seal Beach and enjoy volunteering their time to help others. As active Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) members, both she and Wink assist the Police Department with training community members to prepare for and take care of themselves during a disaster. Pattie helped design the Neighbor 4 Neighbor disaster preparation program and was instrumental in establishing an enthusiastic community base in the Rossmoor Highlands. Neighbor 4 Neighbor provides a platform for community members from individual neighborhoods to meet so they can work together during disasters. Pattie’s commitment and passion for the community are reflected in this special program.

REMINDER - Road Construction on Katella

Construction of the center median along Katella Ave at Chestnut is set to begin on Monday, February 6.

This project will lengthen the eastbound left turn lane on Katella Ave to north Los Alamitos Blvd. approximately 90 feet. In addition, it will restrict motorists travelling westbound on Katella Ave from making left turns into the Rossmoor Center at Polly’s Pies. The project is expected to last for six weeks and work will be completed between the hours of 8:30 am and 4:30 pm Monday through Friday.

In order for construction employees to work safely, at least one lane in each direction will be closed. Adequate signage warning drivers of lane closures will be utilized, but motorists should expect delays and use caution while proceeding through the area.

Questions about the project can be directed to Dave Hunt in the City’s Traffic and Engineering Department at (562) 431-3538, extension 110. To report dangerous driving or hazardous conditions the public should call the Police Department’s 24-hour dispatch number at (562) 594-7232.

General Personal Safety Tips

The following are some general personal safety tips:

• Be aware of your surroundings. Headphones and other distractions divert your attention and you may not hear or notice persons approaching you.

• Trust your intuition. If you feel threatened or something doesn't feel right, take action immediately.

• Travel with groups of friends.

• Know where there are safe places in the areas where you live, work and play, such as where there are groups of people and other activity.

• Avoid shortcuts that take you through alleys, passageways, and other isolated areas.

• Don’t let strangers get too close to you, even if they seem to have a reason. Protect your personal space.

• Carry as few items of value as possible. Be discreet with your belongings.

• Walk with a purpose. Know where you are going ahead of time.

• Have a plan before you see trouble. Be prepared to cross a street or duck into a store, if needed.

• Carry a small amount of cash, and only the credit cards that you intend to use.

• If carrying a wallet, carry it in a front pocket.

• Leave your expensive electronics and jewelry at home.

• Don’t wear clothing or shoes that restrict your movement.

• Do not resist or take action that would jeopardize your own safety. Your property is not worth injury or worse.

• If victimized, make mental notes of the suspect’s appearance, suspect’s vehicle description, and, if possible, memorize the vehicle license plate.

• If you see a suspicious person or situation, do not hesitate to call the police immediately. In Los Alamitos, dial (562) 594-7232 for our 24-Hour Dispatch.  If it is an emergency, dial 9-1-1.
