Happy Thanksgiving from the Los Alamitos Police Department
Safety Tips
Travel and Emergency:
Whether flying or driving, give yourself enough time to arrive early. Anticipate more traffic than usual during the holiday season. Pack an emergency safety kit in your car that includes:
- first aid kit
- flashlight
- blankets and warm clothes
- cell phone charger
- jumper cables
- shovel, ice scraper, & tire chains - if traveling to the mountains
- water and snacks - baby formula and diapers if traveling with infants
Pets Tips
Leaving pets unattended during the festivities can mean they'll eat food that is unsafe for them (bread dough, alcohol, turkey bones, cake). Be careful with seasonal decorations and plants, as they can cause a possible injury to pets.
Don't Drink and Drive
Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Predicts that 25,000 traffic injuries will be the result of drinking and driving during the holiday season. Don't do it!
- assign a designated driver or take a cab
- know your limits
- even a small "buzz" is an impairment
Black Friday Sales Tips
Many people will be out to get the best deals on Black Friday Sales. Just a few things to remember to ensure the safety of your family:
- stay alert and be aware of your surroundings
- report suspicious activity, if you see something say something
- use extra caution while driving
- always lock your vehicle
- be aware of phone scams as they increase during the holiday season
- store all your purchases/packages in the trunk of your car, out of view
- walk to your vehicle with your car keys in your hand
Black Friday Sales Safety Tips
Many stores will be open tomorrow on Thanksgiving for early Black Friday Sales shopping. There will be a frenzy of people shopping and thieves will be watching.
- Lock your vehicles and put your items in the trunk if possible. Thieves know that a blanket covering a large bulky area in the back seat/cargo area of an SUV is probably hiding multiple items to steal.
- Don’t carry large amounts of cash to be seen by others. Keep your wallet and purse close to your body to deter thieves. Don’t leave purses in the child seating area of a shopping cart. As soon as you turn to look at something it offers easy access for a thief to steal.
- Don’t pull out your credit card or ID until asked by the cashier to avoid shoulder surfers obtaining your information.
- Be aware of your surroundings and report any suspicious persons or activity.
- Shopping with several people is safer than shopping alone.
- If using a debit card or ATM, be mindful of anyone watching and shield your PIN.
- Make sure to lock all the doors and windows of your house if you plan to be gone for a long day of shopping and have a neighbor keep an eye on the place if possible.
- Officers do not referee who was entitled the open parking space first.
- There will be long lines, minimal parking and a lot of patience needed.

First, we had the City Pre-School Class come by and get a tour of the building, equipment and police cars in use to serve the community. They are a great bunch of kids and they left with goody bags and big smiles.
Next we had kids from the Wheaton and Hasty families of Rossmoor who dropped off a tasty snack and some wonderful cards that were a hit among all the staff working to keep the neighborhoods safe. Thank you so much for the kind words and expression of support!

Subject with a Knife in Police Department Lobby
On Monday, October 10, 2016, at approximately 2:39 P.M., a
male who was later determined to be a 17 year old juvenile, came into the Los
Alamitos Police Department lobby and threatened the unarmed professional staff
at the front counter with a knife. The subject solicited responding
police personnel to shoot him, and shortly after turned the weapon and
threatened to cause harm to himself. After several attempts at
de-escalating the situation, the subject was distracted and a Taser was
deployed which incapacitated the subject and allowed officers to disarm
him. The juvenile was transported to a local hospital for treatment due
to the Taser probes and for psychological evaluation. No City employees were physically injured.

Urban Coyotes
Seeing a coyote in Los Alamitos or any of the local communities is not as uncommon as most would think.
The best way to protect your pets is to let them outside only when you are with them, especially at night. Some other precautions include:
Long Beach Animal Control Services, who provides animal control service for the City of Los Alamitos, do not respond to calls for service for normal coyote behavior, such as sightings, but these calls are recorded and documented which is important information for coyote management. However, Long Beach Animal Control Officers do respond to calls involving a sick or injured coyote(s), or if there is a public safety issue; for instance, a coyote(s) threatening people or lingering in an area frequented by people, such as a yard, park, playground, school, etc.
Coyote activity should be reported online using the link below. All animal-related emergencies should be reported immediately by calling (562) 570-PETS (7387). If there is an immediate threat to a human, call 9-1-1.
The best way to protect your pets is to let them outside only when you are with them, especially at night. Some other precautions include:
- Never feeding coyotes or any other wildlife.
- Keeping pets and pet food inside. If feeding outside, feed pets during the day (no more than one hour) and remove the food and water bowls when finished.
- Staying close to your pet when taking them outdoors and always keeping them on a leash, especially from dusk through early morning hours.
- Removing fallen fruit from the ground.
- Bagging food wastes such as meat scraps or leftover pet food.
- Keeping trash in containers with tight-fitting lids.
- Using "hazing" techniques to shoo away coyotes, such as standing tall, yelling and waving arms while approaching the coyote; using a whistle, air horn, bell or other device; banging pots or pans together; stomping your feet; using a water hose, pepper spray, or throwing tennis balls or rocks at the coyote.
- Never running away from a coyote.

Battery Investigation - Request for Information
On
Wednesday, June 15, 2016, patrol officers investigated three separate reports
of battery that occurred during the evening in the residential area south of
Katella Avenue, between Maple Street and Lexington Avenue.
Officers
determined that between approximately 4:00 P.M. and 6:30 P.M., three adult
women were approached by a similarly described individual and their buttocks
were touched or grabbed by the suspect.
The suspect then fled the area on a skateboard. None of the victims or witnesses knew the
suspect. A witness stated there may be a
fourth victim who has not come forward.
The
suspect is described as an African American Male, or possibly a Hispanic Male
with a dark complexion, between 18 and 25 years old. He is further described as being short and
thin, with some light facial hair, and was wearing a dark t-shirt and dark
shorts at the time.
While
the three identified crimes being investigated are classified as misdemeanors
in the State of California, the Los Alamitos Police Department believes
incidents like these have a significant impact on our residents' feeling of
safety in the community. As such, the
Police Department is actively working to identify and prosecute the individual
responsible.
Investigators
are also working to determine if there are additional victims and circumstances
in these incidents, and whether the suspect resides in or is associated with
the area. If anyone witnessed these
incidents or has information that may assist investigators in the matter; they
are encouraged to telephone the Los Alamitos Police Watch Commander at (562)
431-2255 ext. 426, or Detective Kim at (562) 431-2255 ext. 407. Or they may anonymously telephone O.C.

Memorial Day, Remembrance and Honor
In honor of Memorial Day on Monday, May 30, the Orange County Sheriff's Department is sharing, in the attached video, a small portion of the 2016 keynote address given by our Chief of Police, Eric R. Nuñez, at the Orange County Peace Officers Memorial. Chief Nuñez shares about losing his father, Army Sgt. Rudolph Nuñez when Chief Nuñez was just four years old.
Chief Nuñez was contacted by the Orange County Sheriff's Department who asked to use a portion of the recorded speech for their Memorial Day message. Chief Nuñez and the Los Alamitos Police Department are grateful to Sheriff Sandra Hutchens for approving this project and having her outstanding staff put together such a wonderful tribute for our American Military Fallen and their Families this Memorial Weekend.
Thank you to our military men and women who have given the ultimate sacrifice in service to our County, and to their families who have had to tragically live without them.

Orange County Peace Officers Memorial and Candlelight Vigil
On May 26th, the Orange County Chiefs’ of Police and Sheriff’s Association and The Orange County Sheriff’s Advisory Council held the 2016 tribute to all the officers who serve the County of Orange, and a remembrance of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice "In the Line of Duty"
Our Chief of Police, Eric R. Nuñez, who is currently serving as President of the Orange County Chiefs' of Police and Sheriff's Association, served as keynote speaker for the occasion.
Excerpt - "Our Fallen: … they are the evidence that what we do has meaning, they are the proof that what we do has purpose, and they are the absolute truth that what we do is truly noble. Their lives and their deaths remind us that we are not immortal but rather we are merely ordinary people who have sworn an oath to take on an extraordinary responsibility to help and protect others in the mundane and the most unimaginable circumstances with a full understanding of what the cost to do so… might actually mean."
The annual memorial and candlelight vigil is held at the Orange County Peace Officers’ Memorial Monument at the Sheriff's Department Regional Training Academy in Tustin.

Vehicle Theft Recovery Award
On May 24, 2016, Detective Kim was honored as the Los Alamitos Vehicle Theft Recovery Officer
of the Year at an annual awards brunch sponsored by the Auto Theft Advisory Committee. A.T.A.C.
recognizes the officers from Orange County who had recovered the most stolen vehicles during the previous year from each department.
Auto thefts occur often in the Los Angeles metro region. Here are some tips to prevent theft:
1. Lock your car. Many people don't routinely lock their vehicles, especially when parked at home.
2. Remove the keys. Many cars are stolen with the keys in the ignition. Many modern vehicles have security c
hips embedded in them requiring the key to be present before the engine will start. Leaving the keys with the vehicle defeats this purpose.
2. Use an anti-theft device that is visible to the thief. Steering-wheel clubs and pedal locks are sometimes enough to cause most casual thieves to move on.
3. Park in your garage or, while away from home, in high-visibility areas where thieves can't operate in private.
4. Have the vehicle identification number (VIN) etched on the glass and other significant parts of the car. This discourages chop shops.
5. Use tracking services that may assist in getting the car back.

Things You Don't See on Katella Avenue Very Often...
Talk to longtime residents for any length of time and memories often drift back to a time when it
wasn't uncommon to see people with horses walking, along the Katella Avenue corridor.
Today, it wasn't a memory.
A driver towing two horses to the nearby racetrack had to make an emergency stop because a disturbance between the animals in the trailer made it unsafe to continue driving. An officer and Sergeant from day watch patrol and a Sergeant from a neighboring agency responded to make sure the scene was safe for the driver, animals and the passing motorists. Chief Nuñez captured the picture and video of the participants calming the upset horse who had to be removed from the trailer.
No one was hurt and the animals eventually made their way back along Katella Avenue. We're sure a few commuters must have questioned what they saw as they passed. Have a safe weekend!

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way Back from County Jail...
Last week an officer working patrol was returning from booking an arrestee at Orange County Jail in
Santa Ana. While driving back to the City, he spotted two people running down the street who were drawn to something on the sidewalk. Officer Nelson stopped and found a turtle wandering down the street and took it into protective custody since its owner was no where to be found. As this was in our neighboring city near Katella Avenue and Valley View Street which is served by the Orange County Animal Care Services, it was turned over to their shelter. If you have information regarding this animal, please contact them and assist with reunification.
