Lost Dog Looking for her Owner

OWNER FOUND

Thanks for passing the word!!

A resident found this female chocolate lab yesterday morning, Friday December 4, in the area of Kearsage Avenue and Bennington Street in the New Dutch Haven neighbor of Los Alamitos.  She has a red collar but no tag attached, and she is not "chipped."  No one has made any inquiries as of this morning, so she may have wandered a distance from home.  She is at the Long Beach Animal Control facility waiting for her owner.  Please pass this along.

The City of Los Alamitos contracts with the City of Long Beach for Animal Care Services.  For more information about other lost animals, animal safety resources and licensing requirements, go to:

Prevent Tailgate Thefts

The National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) recently released a report that shows that tailgate
thefts are on the rise.

The top three states for tailgate thefts during this period were: Texas, California, and Arizona.

The underground market is lively for items that can be acquired at a fraction of their legitimate cost. Tailgates are no exception. While many of these stolen tailgates end up on similar vehicles, others are simply sold for scrap, which contributes to the nationwide problem of metal theft.

Tailgate thefts can occur anywhere; single family residential areas, multifamily residential areas, and sometimes thefts have occurred in single locations, such as auto dealers’ lots and shopping malls.

Since a tailgate theft takes just seconds to accomplish, consumers should consider anti-theft tactics:
  • First, if your model has an integrated lock, use it. If a tailgate can’t be opened, it can’t be stolen as easily. If you don’t have one, get one; they are relatively inexpensive.
  •  Park with the tailgate as close as you can to an object or a structure to prevent the tailgate from opening.
  • Etch the truck’s vehicle identification number (VIN) or your own personal identification number into the tailgate; this will aid in its recovery and may prevent its theft in the first place.
  • Evaluate an after-market locking device.
  • A common anti-theft product looks like hose clamps and are attached to the lift gate cables or where the tailgate hinges to the truck body

Heroes with Heart Recognition Gala

Last Thursday, November 5th, Officer Malatesta was among those recognized as Heroes with Heart
by the Trauma Intervention Program (TIP) of Orange County.

The annual Heroes with Heart Dinner is a gala event attended by over 400 elected officials, public safety officials, hospital executives, business leaders and volunteers.

The event recognizes law enforcement officers, firefighters and hospital personnel who went above the call of duty throughout the year to provide compassionate support to members of the public in crisis. Recipients of the Heroes with Heart Award are unsung heroes who, at this event, are given the public recognition they deserve.

Officer Malatesta was nominated by a TIP responder for showing extraordinary compassion to a crime victim at a call for service.

“On 11/17/14 I was called by Officer Brent Malatesta of the Los Alamitos Police Department to help a woman who had asked to speak to Officer Malatesta because he had responded to her residential burglary a few days earlier. I was very impressed with Officer Malatesta’s kindness. I could see that his validation of the victim’s crime experience and his willingness to listen to her made all the difference in her ability to begin coping with her victimization.”

— TIP Volunteer Renee Lutz

TIP of Orange County is a chapter of the Trauma Intervention Programs, Inc. (TIP), a national non-profit organization founded in 1985. TIP has 15 affiliates serving over 250 cities across the nation.  In each Affiliate, citizen volunteers respond to traumatic incidents at the request of Police, Fire and Hospital personnel to support those who are emotionally traumatized.

Congratulations to Officer Malatesta and all the honorees.

Pre-School Trick or Treaters Visit the Los Alamitos Police Department

Los Alamitos Recreation Center's pre-school class, Ready, Set, Go! visited the Police Department dressed in their costumes on Friday, October 30, 2015.

Miss Barbara's class of 4- and 5-year olds were welcomed by Records Specialist Scott and Police Aide McDowell, who distributed little Halloween bags of safety tips and treats, and then provided the children with a brief tour of the station.  The highlight was meeting Officer Brandt, who allowed the little goblins, princesses, and super heroes to look inside his police vehicle and answered their questions.

Cub Scouts Tour Los Alamitos Police Department

The Los Alamitos Police Department was pleased to host a station tour for Los Alamitos Cub Scout Pack 657, Den 5, on Thursday, October 29, 2015.

Following a brief tour of the station, which included the Records Bureau, the Watch Commander's Office, and the jail, which is a two room holding facility, the group of 8- and 9-year old scouts were introduced to Corporal  Smith, who explained the various tools used by officers.  Corporal Smith answered questions about her duty belt, handcuffs,  Taser, the Less Lethal Long Gun, and various emergency and first-aid equipment in the trunk.  The scouts got to examine the interior of a police vehicle, complete with  flashing lights and the loud-speaker system.
