Today is Prescription Drug Take-Back Day!

Girl Scout Troop 1631 is working in partnership with the Los Alamitos Police Department to raise awareness for a Prescription Drug Take-Back Day!

As part of their Silver Award Project, Troop 1631 is working to make people aware of the environmental damage that is caused by flushing medications into the sewage system where they contaminates our lakes, rivers, and oceans.

To participate in this event, bring your expired, unused, or unwanted prescription and over-the-counter medications to the Police Department for disposal on Saturday, April 30, from 10:00am to 2:00pm.

Officials Encourage Residents to Stay Away from Beached Seal Lions

Contact Animal Care Services to Report Sick Animals (562) 570-PETS

Last week, Long Beach Animal Care Services began getting calls from residents about sea lions coming ashore. Since that time, more than a half dozen sea lions have been reported in the cities of Long Beach and Seal Beach. Some of these animals have shown signs of the naturally occurring domoic acid poisoning recently highlighted in local media.

Animal Care Services continues to work with the Marine Mammal Care Center in San Pedro to monitor and transport sick animals when authorized. The Marine Mammal Care Center website (http://www.marinemammalcare.org/) encourages residents to stay away from beached sea lions and contact Animal Care Services (562) 570-PETS to report animals that appear to be sick. Approaching beached marine mammals is a violation of federal law and is dangerous. The Marine Mammal Care Center website recommends:

Seals and sea lions like to rest on the beach to get warm. Not all animals on the beach have stranded and require medical attention.

• Do not approach, touch or feed the animal. The animals can bite and it is a federal offense to disturb them.


• Do not push the animal back into the surf or pour water on it. Pouring water on it may only further serve to debilitate a sick
  or injured animal.


• Do not feed the animal. Feeding the animals something other than what it is accustomed to may lead to illness and possibly
  death.

Keep your distance and observe the animal from binocular range. Is it thin, can you see its ribs or backbone or any visible signs of injury. Is it alert and just sunning itself? Is it watching you but not very active? Is it unconscious? See if its eyes are tearing. If its eyes are wet so that it looks raccoon-like, that is a good sign, indicating the animal is hydrated.

If an animal appears to be in distress, contact the local lifeguard and provide the location and condition of the animal.

National Public Safety Telecommunications Week

The challenging work of public safety telecommunicators is being acknowledged this week during National Public Safety Telecommunications Week.

Telecommunicators efforts to protect the public are heard but not seen every day when members of the community call their local police or sheriff's station seeking help. Dispatchers and 9-1-1 operators are the ‘behind the scenes’ link between those in need and those that can help.

At least one week every year, we celebrate and honor our West Cities Communications (West-Comm) dispatchers by recognizing their contributions to helping keep the people of Los Alamitos safe.

Please take a moment and say thank you if you happen to talk to a telecommunicator.

National Public Safety Telecommunications Week (April 10-16, 2011) was established to raise awareness of the hard work and dedication of 9-1-1 calltakers, dispatchers and other telecommunications staff. These include the technicians that maintain radio and emergency phone systems, those that train communications staff and the supervisors and managers of communications centers across the country.

Telecommunicators provide a vital link to the public safety services on which Americans rely every day.

West County Cities "Team Up to Crackdown" on Distracted Driving

Press Release dated April 14, 2011 In a regional enforcement campaign, traffic officers from the West County cities of Cypress, Los Alamitos, and Seal Beach Police Departments will "Team Up to Crackdown" on distracted driving. April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month, and motorcycle officers from each department will conduct joint saturation enforcement activities in all three cities on April 26, 27, and 28. More...
